New regulations coming into effect for Indian students seeking visas to the United States

The Indian student visa application process has been modified by the US embassy. The embassy posted information on X (formerly Twitter) stating that these adjustments took effect on Monday, November 27. Every embassy in Indian cities is affected by these modifications. It is recommended that prospective students who intend to study in the United States under the F, M, or J visa programs be aware of these modifications.

As of right now, the US embassy has mandated that all applicants for F, M, and J student visas must create a profile and schedule appointments using the information from their own passport. The purpose of this action is to stop appointment system abuse and fraud.

“At the Visa Application Centers (VAC), applicants who have made a profile or scheduled an appointment with an incorrect passport number will not be accepted. The visa fee will be forfeited and their appointments would be canceled, the embassy stated.

It is required that individuals who wish to apply for a F or M visa participate in a school or program that has been approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Applicants seeking a J visa are required to have sponsorship from an organization that has been approved by the United States Department of State.

In addition, the United States Embassy in the United States encouraged those who have already created a profile or scheduled an appointment with an incorrect passport number to either create a new profile with appropriate passport information or change the passport information that is already included in the profile. On the other hand, if the previous receipt for the visa fee was linked to the profile with inaccurate passport details, then payment of a new receipt for the visa fee might be required for this operation. In the event that an applicant’s previous passport is misplaced or stolen, they are required to present a photocopy or other evidence of the former passport number in order to be admitted to the United States Visa and Immigration Center (VAC).

Earlier, the US embassy had reported a record number of processed visa applications in 2023, surpassing all previous years.
